Wayne McCashen Introduces the 3rd Edition

Beyond Child Rescue was first published in 1996 and has made a valuable contribution to the child and family welfare sector. It has been widely read and in many cases it has become the catalyst for child and family welfare workers and organisations in Australia and New Zealand to rethink service delivery. The third edition of this book is now available from Innovative Resources.

Since 1995, the period up to which Beyond Child Rescue covers, St Luke's has grown and changed but its commitment to the strengths philosophy is as central as it ever was.

In the strengths approach, every interaction with an individual client, family, group or whole community is based on principles of social justice, respect, self-determination, the sharing of resources, skills and 'knowledges', transparency and a recognition and mobilisation of their strengths and resources. In this book, these principles are reflected in Di O'Neil's story of her work with the Williams family and her description of the structures of service delivery.

We plan to publish further books that record the ongoing development of the strengths approach and describe its principles, processes, skills and applications. For readers, familiar or not with strengths-based ideas, Beyond Child Rescue captures a concrete description of what it can look like in practice and why. We hope you find this book useful.
